At week 37, your due date is very close now. The doctor’s don’t consider your baby full term yet until 39 weeks. The next 2 weeks is very crucial for the development of your baby brain and lungs to fully mature. 

The baby is rapidly developing in the next couple of weeks.  If you were to go into premature labor, the baby has a 99 % survival rate with out any abnormalities or long-term complications.

Preparation For Birth

The baby immune system is getting stronger with antibodies to protect him from any infections or diseases. He is getting all the antibodies and nutrients from the umbilical cord that helps prepare him for delivery.

Motor Coordination Development

The motor coordination has mature greatly; the baby is able to grasp objects such as the umbilical cord.

The baby at week 37 is the size of a Swiss chard.  You’re now considered to be at full term and your baby could arrive any day. The baby is around 19 inches long in size from crown to heel. He weighs around 6.30 pounds. The baby usually gains about 1 ounce per day.

The baby will have short periods were he is active.  The baby is growing rapidly having less space to move around so his kicks and punches might feel a bit lighter that previously before. 

 Majority of baby’s at week 37 have already positioned themselves head down. If the baby remains breech or transverse they will try EVC. External cephalic version (EVC) helps the doctor apply some pressure to see if the baby will rotate.

At week 37, you might start experiencing more pressure in the lower abdomen due to the baby gradually dropping down in your belly. When the baby starts dropping down it opens up space for your lungs, ribcage, and stomach to stretch a bit.

Many women complain of shortness of breath and heartburn. The baby dropping might cause some alters to your center of gravity. Many women experience had been a bit clumsier than usual.

At week 37, full term is completed when carrying twins. Majority of women give birth to twins anytime from weeks 32 to 37. The babies will have a significant survival rate and not have any abnormalities.

Your doctor will begin a prenatal check every week till day of birth. The prenatal routine will help to monitor the baby’s position or any infections.

The doctor will check also for opening dilation or thinning of your cervix. It’s normal to start dilating weeks before labor. The doctor will perform the Group B strep screening to detect any bacteria.
