Congrats on reaching the 38th week of your pregnancy. In a couple of weeks, you will be meeting your baby of joy.
The doctor’s don’t consider your baby full term yet until 39 weeks. The next few weeks are very crucial for the development of your baby brain and all the organs fully maturing.
The baby’s nervous system continues to develop in the next couple of weeks. The brain development has accelerated in the third trimester and it will continue to mature till birth.
Internal Organ Development
Majority of the organs have fully mature by the 38th week. The lungs are the only organs still developing all the way to childbirth. The baby’s digestive system is already developed.
The first bowl movement will contain the lanugo hair, vernix caseosa, and greenish substance meconium shed by the baby and process along with the amniotic fluid.
The folds and creases of the hip, neck, wrists are becoming more obvious with the help of the fat layer at 38th week. The baby will continue to develop fat layer that helps regulate body temperature once he is born. The skin color will continue to develop.
The baby weighs about 6.8 pounds around the 38th week. He is over 19 ½ inches from crown to heel. The baby’s organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb.
Majorities of baby’s at week 38 have positioned their head down getting ready for childbirth. In rare cases, if the baby is still in breech position the doctor will try to perform an ECV. The external cephalic version (EVC) is a procedure where the doctor applies pressure on certain parts of your abdomen to try to rotate the baby.
The success rate of turning the baby around with EVC is around 50%. The factors that play a major role if baby will be turning around are based on the baby weight, age, of the positioning of the breech.
Due the baby dropping lower in your abdomen in the next couple of weeks the indigestion and heartburn has completely stopped. There are many benefits of the baby dropping it helps relive symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath. You will feel an urge to pass urine more often than usual due to the pressure on the bladder.
During the 37th and 38th weeks your weight gain starts to slow down. The breast is producing tons of yellowish fluid colostrum getting reading for breast-feeding.
You might notice your breast leaking from time to time. Your breast is getting ready to produced milk filled with nutrients to help the baby fight any infections and diseases. At week 38, the body starts to get ready for labor as the vagina dilating and thinning for birth.
38 Weeks Pregnant With Twins
If you’re carrying twins you have almost reached full term at 37 weeks. Majority of women carrying twins usually go to labor during 36th week.
To make more room in the womb when carrying twins one of the baby’s usually move toward the pelvic cavity to create more space.
During 38th week prenatal check might be the last one before birth. This week you’ll be consulting with your doctor the various medications and labor procedures to help make labor easier.
