What Is The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy is a sensation of numbness, weakness, and tingling feeling in your hand because of pressure on the median nerve located in your wrist. Repetitive movements after a long period usually cause carpal tunnel.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel In Pregnancy?

If you’re experiencing any tingling or numbness painful hands during pregnancy, it’s likely caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.  

Due to all the hormonal changes during pregnancy it causes fluid retention.  The fluid retention adds pressure on the median nerve causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. 

Different Type of Risk Factors:

  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Family history of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • History of any wrist injury
  • History of prior surgery
  • Being overweight prior to pregnancy

Pregnancy Induced Carpal Tunnel Symptoms: What Does It Feel Like?

  • Tingling feeling
  • Pain on the palm side of your index
  • Pain radiating up your palm 
  • Difficulty to move the thumb
  • Hard to grip

When Do Symptoms Occur?

Carpel tunnel syndrome usually appears later in the pregnancy during the second and third trimester of the pregnancy.

The symptoms worsen at night and in the morning due to the accumulation of fluid. The extra fluid causes pressure on the wrists and hands.

How Long Does The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Last?

The condition is temporary during pregnancy.  The carpal tunnel syndrome usually goes away after delivery and it can take up to 2-3 months. 

The hormones will go back to level weeks or months after delivery and the condition will go away.

How To Treat And Manage Carpal Tunnel Symptoms In Pregnancy?

It’s normal to have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome during pregnancy.  There are no treatments to cure CTS.  There are a couple of things you can do to relieve some of the symptoms:


  • Hot and cold therapy
  • Massage the area to relieve pressure
  • Wrist braces

Treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome After Pregnancy?

Surgery can cure carpal tunnel syndrome, but since most cases of pregnancy related carpal tunnel syndrome resolve themselves after birth. 

However, surgery is not a recommended option for pregnant women.

Can You Prevent Carpal Tunnel During Pregnancy?

There is no way to prevent the condition during pregnancy. You can rest your fingers and avoid doing repetitive movements of the fingers.
