Ectopic Pregnancy Diagnosis

Can An Ectopic Pregnancy Be Detected On A Home Pregnancy Test

A home pregnancy test will give a positive result since it detects the hCG hormone in your urine even if you have an ectopic pregnancy.

You can also receive a negative pregnancy test due to levels of hCG being low.

How Soon Can An Ectopic Pregnancy Be Detected?

An ectopic pregnancy is usually diagnosed between the fifth and tenth weeks of pregnancy.

How Is An Ectopic Pregnancy Diagnosed?

Due to ectopic pregnancy the gestational sac gets implanted in odd places causing it difficult to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy. Usually, the ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed using a regular ultrasound scan.

Additional exams to detect ectopic pregnancy include a pelvic exam. The doctor will check for any tender mass around the lower abdomen.

Blood Test For Measuring hCG levels

Measuring hCG levels is the best way for your doctor to detect early abnormalities after the pregnancy has been established.

The blood tests measure the level of human chorionic gonadotropin in your blood stream.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound is a type of pelvic ultrasound used to help your doctor to examine your reproductive organs. It includes the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and vagina.

Laparoscopy

In rare occasions, your doctor might perform a laparoscopy. A surgery that uses a thin, lighted tube put through a cut incision in the belly. The surgery looks at the abdominal organs. The surgery helps find problems such as cysts, infection, and adhesions

Differential Diagnosis

The different types of diagnosis include:

  • Miscarriage
  • Acute appendicitis
  • Pelvic inflammatory

Complications: Ruptured Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy can lead to rupture of the fallopian tube if left untreated. An ectopic rupture pregnancy will cause severe internal bleeding.

Another common symptom is your blood pressure dropping extremely low. Make sure to consult a doctor since it can turn fatal.
