Definition of Polyhydramnios:

What is polyhydramnios?  Polyhydramnios is the excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid surrounds the baby in the uterus during pregnancy. The amniotic fluid surrounds your baby to protect him from being hurt if you have a blow on your stomach.

It also helps with the development of your babay lungs and keep infections away. This usually occurs 1 percent of pregnancies were too much amniotic fluid enters the womb. Most cases of polyhydramnios are moderate or mild.

Polyhydramnios Classification

Polyhydramnios is usually determine when amnioctic fluid volume reaches two litres or more.

There are two clinical varieties of polyhydramnios:

  • Chronic Polyhydramnios where excess amniotic fluid accumulates gradually
  • Acute Polyhydramnios where excess amniotic fluid collects rapidly

Oligohydramnios is the opposite of polyhydramnios a deficiency in amniotic fluid.

What Causes Polyhydramnios

The diagnosis are obtained by ultrasound. Some of the most common causes of polyhydramnios are:

  • Gestational diabetes
  • Fetal anomalies
  • Fetal injections

What Are The Symptoms of Polyhydramnios

The pressure from being exerted within the uterus and nearby organs causes these symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling in the lower extremities
  • Decreased urine production
  • Difficulty climbing stairs
  • Large increase of your stomach growth
  • Swollen legs
  • Stretch marks
  • Varicose Veins
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation

What Problems Are Likely To Result From Polyhydramnios

Some common problems likely to result from polyhydramnios are:

  • Preterm labor
  • Placental Abruption
  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Birth defects
  • Stillbirth
  • Excessive fetal growth
