What is round ligament pain?

The pain from round ligament is usually felt in the lower belly or groin area on one or both sides.  It’s a jabbing or sharp pain most common complaint during pregnancy. 

The pain usually is felt in the second trimester of pregnancy.  The pain you get from round ligament is pretty common. 

What Causes Round Ligament Pain in Pregnancy?

The cause of round ligament sharp pain in pregnancy is due to the uterus growth. The round ligaments surround the uterus by your pelvis.

 The uterus continues to grow through out the duration of the pregnancy causing the ligaments to thicken and stretch in order to provide support.  Any type of movement is the main trigger for feeling the pain. It usually occurs more commonly on the right side of the pelvis.

Round Ligament Pain Triggering Factors

The round ligament acute pain triggering factors from sudden movements as the following:

  1. Sneezing
  2. Movement in bed
  3. Laughing hard
  4. Standing up or bending over quickly
  5. Coughing

Signs And Symptoms of Round Ligament Pain During Pregnancy

There are many signs and symptoms to pay attention to.  Here are some common symptoms:

  1. Pain in ovaries or cysts
  2. Abnormal growth in the abdominal area
  3. Cramps due to the slow digestion
  4. Abnormal growth in the abdominal area
  5. Appendicitis
  6. Full bladders make the pain worse
  7. Ligament spasms

Round Ligament Pain Prevention

There are many things you can do to prevent round ligament sharp pain.  Here are some of the most commons things to do:

  1. Make sure to consult your doctor about the pain your feeling.
  2. Change positions: Pay attention to your body and the sudden movements you make that might cause pain.  If your standing up and start feeling pain the sit.
  3. Lie Down: The pain usually thrives in both sides. Most women feel the pain on their right side mostly.  Whenever you feel pain make sure to move to the opposite side from where you feel the pain.
  4. Sudden movements: Any sudden movements can cause the ligaments to feel sudden pain.
  5. Get plenty of rest: The best way to reduce pain is by getting plenty of rest.

Round Ligament Pain Test And Examinations

 If your pain persists is recommended to speak with your physician right away.  The doctor will do a simple examination including an abdominal, pelvic, and digital rectal exam.

The examination might feel a bit uncomfortable but is important to have yourself diagnose.

Round Ligament Pain Differential Diagnosis

There are different pain differential diagnoses:

  1. Placental abruption
  2. Cholecystitis
  3. Pancreatitis
  4. Appendicitis
  5. Intussusception
  6. Pyelonephritis
  7. Round ligament syndrome
  8. Hydronephrosis
  9. Ovarian torsion
  10. Uterine fibroid degeneration
  11. Rectus muscle abscesses
