What is Sciatica? Sciatica during pregnancy is pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back, often owing to degeneration of an intervertebral disk. 

 Typically felt in the lower back to shooting down behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. The pain can might so terrible it makes standing or sitting nearly impossible.

Sciatica is a common pregnancy problem. The pressure on the sciatic nerve triggers sciatica during pregnancy. The growing baby lying heavily upon the Sciatic nerve inside the pelvis places pressure-causing pain down the lower part of the body.

The symptoms of Sciatica during pregnancy are pain from your lower back extending through the hip and buttock. It usually affects one leg.  Majority of pregnant women have reported the pain worsening when sitting, sneeze, or coughing.

  • Don’t stand for long periods of time.  Getting off your feet and resting will help ease some of the pressure from your lower back.
  • Use a warm towel on the spot where you feel the pain.
  • When sleeping at night lay on the side that does not hurt.
  • Water aerobics is a great way to relive some of the pressure.
  • Try to gain weight slowly during your pregnancy so you don’t add additional pressures to your lower extremities.
  • Visit a chiropractor so they can provide you with physical therapy to relive pressure. 
  • Make sure to workout your core to help it keep is strength.
