What causes swelling in pregnancy? Swelling during pregnancy is cause by various factors contributing to foot, hand, and ankle swelling. 

During a pregnancy you tend to retain more water and changes in your body tend to cause swollen feet, ankles, and hands. During pregnancy, the extra fluid in the body usually causes swelling or edema.

What Are The Risk Factors For Swelling While Pregnant

There are many risk factors that play when swelling during pregnancy. Here are some of the most common factors: 

  • Stiffness
  • Scarring between layers of tissue
  • Increased risk of skin ulcers
  • Difficulty walking
  • Decreased blood circulation
  • Stretched skin

Types Of Edema In Pregnancy

There are two types of edema.

  • Pitting Edema, the accumulation of excess fluid in a fluid compartment.
  • Non-Pitting Edema, the indentation made by a pressure on the affected area does not persist.

Preventing Swollen Feet, Ankles, And Hands During Pregnancy

There are many things you can do to help relieve some of the pressure of been swollen?

  • Put your feel up whenever possible
  • Do not cross your legs
  • Avoid crossing your ankles
  • Stretch your legs frequently
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Avoid wearing socks that have tight bands
  • Drink plenty of water

How To Reduce Swelling During Pregnancy

There are many things you can do to reduce swelling during pregnancy.

  • Stay off your feet
  • Sleep on your side
  • Wear compression stocks
  • Include physical activity in your daily routine

Dietary Tips For Swelling In Pregnancy

It’s essential to eat a healthy balance diet during your pregnancy. Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.  Decrease the salt intake since it makes you bloated. Make sure to drink plenty of water to reduce excessive fluids from your body. 

Include in your diet good sources of vitamins C, food rich in vitamin E, and make sure to take your prenatal vitamins.
